The Artist’s Studio
The Artist’s Studio is located in the city of Caucaia do Alto in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The little town is surrounded by small farms and country houses and it is just one hour away from São Paulo, the largest city in the country and the fifth largest city in the world by population.
The Studio (see slide show above) occupies an area of 1000sqf (100m2) and is a few yards from the main house (see slide show above). There Hortencio spends most of his time researching different materials, studying the old masters painting techniques and developing new materials and his own media for painting and reproducing rock art.
Hortencio’s Studio is very different from most artist’s. As you can see in the picture, he is able to paint and also keep the space spotless!
Once of the pictures above shows some of the pigments Hortencio uses to develop his own media. Besides purchasing exclusive high quality paints he also spends hours in his color lab preparing his own paint, using pigments imported from different parts of the world.
Hortencio is always looking for the latest developments in paint chemistry and in ways of improving the color output and endurance through time and climate changes. He submits each color through light exposure and temperature changes.
He also prepares his own canvases and rock art support from scratch. His works of art are not only the result of his talent as an artist but also the knowledge and skills as an engineer devoting his time to bring excellence to his works.
Here are some of the subjects Hortencio have researched and applied at his works: fillers, pigments, catalysts, dryers, stabilizing agents, bactericides, fungicides, adhesion, promoter, emulsifier, etc. Though you can visualize his talent as an artist, this part of his work is invisible now and will only show its difference in 200 years!
